White at Night

"Slow Food Done Fast" is the motto of the little deli
just outside Eskenazi Health.
The menu posted in the window shows a lot
of vegan and gluten free options.
However, they keep short hours, opening
only for the lunch crowd, so I haven't been able
to try this little store's offerings.
I see it only at night, when it's clean, white
interior gleams softly in the night lights.

Fireworks Without the Sparkle

The lighting on the trees outside Eskenazi Health
made their spiky twigs stand out like bursts
of gold and red fireworks against the night sky.

Night Patterns

At night, the different kinds of lights
add interest to the windows of buildings
on the IUPUI campus, revealing
patterns in the structures of otherwise
mundane rectangles.

Reflections on Waiting

At night, the lights in and around
Eskenazi Health create patterns
of light and color, making the place
seem to glitter and move in its own reflections.
This is not a place of fear and shadows.
People are all around, sitting on the benches,
at ease in the beauty and light around them.

The Art of Healing

As Eskenazi Health was being constructed and as its shape
began to emerge, I wondered how the architects
could possibly make a bunch of stacked boxes look interesting.
I needn't have worried because the designers have,
in essence, created frames for art work. For the main building,
an artist was commissioned who designed a facade
of vertical blue stripes, while another has adorned a second
segment with translucent flanges that reflect and diffuse
the light as it changes throughout the day.
Yet a third fabricated an enameled steel installation
for the parking garage that also plays with light and shadow,
changing with the time of day and as drivers pass by.

It is the same inside, where artwork serves to create
an island of beauty and calm, one where the art of healing
is practiced for the people of the community.

Convex View: Yellow and White Skewed

Once again, I paused on my way to the coffee shop
the other night to look at the garage door
and railings in the Chase Tower. The bright yellow
paint makes the gray asphalt take on a violet
tinge. A compliment to yellow, the violet color
hovers in the shadows like a veil.

Just Before the Night Comes

Early Thursday evening, as I left a meeting at the NCAA
headquarters, I looked to the east and saw this - the sun,
reflected by the entrance to the NCAA Hall of Champions,
was just beginning to dip below the horizon, while
the J.W. Marriott Hotel was doing its damnedest
to blend into the night sky. A few yards farther on, the
walkway bridge over the Central Canal provided
a lighted path back towards the downtown.

A Beaded Curtain

After swimming Monday evening, I went downtown
to catch the bus home. It was raining a cold mist
as I waited the few minutes before it arrived.
I sat on a bench at the Federal court building to watch
the traffic and take in all the colored lights.
Many of the buildings have colored lights as a part of
their decorative features, accenting their ridges and eaves.
Some change with the season; one building, whose lights are
usually blue, showed an eerie orange glow for Halloween.
Traffic and street lights cast their luminous sheen
onto the damp pavement and, as the bus prepared to pull
away from the curb, the rivulets of rain took on
the colors of red beaded curtains, the wipers pulling the strands
aside to reveal the colorful scene just beyond.

Night Colors

I like to always sit on the right hand side of the bus whenever
I get the choice of a seat. First of all, I just like to see where I am going
at all times and second, I love the colors of the traffic signals
and enjoy seeing them arrayed over streets for miles
into the distance. My favorite times are when the green lights
shine out from the backdrop of a blue gray sky.
