The Sun Wedges In

Earlier this evening, around eight p.m.,
the sun's light bounced off the Old National Bank
building, then careened down Ohio Street,
where it shown brightly, a brilliant wedge determined
to illuminate the street in one last flurry
before dipping behind the horizon.

Looking West to See East

The Friday evening sun cast its rays towards
the east, and were mirrored back into the glass-clad
buildings to their west. For a few minutes,
the Downtown streets were doubly illuminated,
both by the sun and by its reflected light.
It's Race Weekend in Indy, with the promise
of fair weather bringing out happy crowds for the
Indy 500 and related festivities.

Tangled Pink

While wandering the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art,
I found these pale pink flowers, their long stems
tangled and entwining as they wound
themselves sinuously towards the sunlight.

Embossed on the Memory

When I was little, each New Year brought new calendars to the house.
Usually provided by our neighborhood grocer,
the pictures were attached to a pasteboard backing with
a little calendar below the grocer's name and address.
The pictures were brightly colored stock photos,
and often had embossed surfaces to accent the trees, flowers,
or whatever. If you had told me that skies could be so blue,
trees so green, or fruit so red I would have said,
"Maybe, but only in Vermont" -- or wherever the photo
had been taken. Nothing where I lived was ever
as pretty as the scenes on the calendars.

Sometimes, however, I look up to see the sky
on a clear day is as blue, the leaves so green, and the
fruit so red as any other place I ever imagined.
This time, a jet contrail marked the path of a plane
as it wove a path among others similar to it,
all to places where, it is hoped, the sky is as beautiful
for them as it sometimes is for me.

Ooh-ooh-ooh

As I entered the Natatorium late Monday afternoon,
I was caught up in fantasies; some people chatter on their phones
as they walk along, I make up
stories, trying to visualize what sort of reception
my little photo exhibit will have
when it goes up a couple months from now,
or whether a man I like will ever get around
to acknowledging my presence.
Yadda-yadda-yadda.

Then magic happens as I walk through
the parking garage entrance to the pool.
The late afternoon sun peeks through the slats
of the garage, casting a pattern of stripes
on the pavement that are, in turn, reflected back
onto the concrete by the glass entry-way.
Fantasies are forgotten while I try to record
the magic of light. My world is small but,
from time to time, it offers
joyful treats such as these.

It's A Party!

Early Saturday afternoon, while waiting downtown for a bus,
I looked up to see a herd of nicely dressed people
approaching from across the street. They were being led by
a casually dressed woman carrying a camera.

Given that only one of the women was wearing white and that
the other women were clad in identically colored gowns,
I quickly surmised the people formed a wedding party, in the
process of having pictures taken of the event and
their participation.

The women's dresses had the distinct quality
of not looking like bridesmaids' dresses, those notoriously
hideously styled and colored nightmares of legend.
The bride had also selected a beautiful color combination
for her wedding flowers; they made for lovely
bouquets and boutonnieres

The sunlight gave the Federal Court Building
a warm aura, making the site a pleasant background
for the delicate chiffon, silk, and flowers.
Afterward, the ladies picked up the hems of their gowns and,
trailed by the men, the photographer led her
charges back across the street, returning in the direction
from which they had come, trailing a happy mood
and a few moments of prettiness behind them.

Sunshine on a Cloudy Day

We've had our share of cloudy days this week,
but the cooler temperatures are a welcome relief ,
being 20-30 degrees cooler than at this time last year.
This morning the fir trees had crystal drops
of rain hanging from their needles, adding the
only sparkle to the gray morning.
I did happen to find a bit of sun, though.
Right at my feet, fissures radiated from a divot
in the asphalt of a parking lot, creating
a sunny spot in the drab morning.

Sun Drenched

I see these flowers planted all around.
Their color combination, the contrast of
the bright pink and purple,
just vibrates in the sunlight.

Sunset Reflections

On my way last night to the restaurant where I would have dinner,
I passed through a side street that was brightly lit from the early evening sun.
However, the sun's light was cast from the east, reflected by
the gold-colored glass on a nearby office building into
the narrow little chasm between buildings.

Flying

I see you and I can barely keep my feet upon the ground.
I want so much to fly, to turn and twist,
To soar and dip in the sunlit sky like a pink kite,
Fluttering, darting, my ribbon streamers trailing a dancing path
Until, at last, I descend, running a few light steps upon the ground,
Once again anonymous, unseen by you,
Oblivious to my joy.

End of Day

Headed west on 10th Street at the White River Bridge,
we had our way lighted by the bright orange sun,
as it briefly sat poised on the horizon, then dipped below the tree line.
I had begun my day with the sun turning the eastern sky
mauve, then pink, then orange as it lit our path,
then guided me towards home in the evening.

A Brief Glance

I'm afraid that if someone turned me loose in, say, Yellowstone Park,
I'd never come out except to download my image files.
I was walking across the bridge at the Coke Field when I glanced
to my right and saw what I think could be the best little
set-up - fall leaves back-lit by the sun revealing their ribs and
color, with sun-sparkled water below.
Damn, I just love that russet and yellow-green
color combination.
