Sorta Straight and Very Crooked

Okay, so I'm just waiting for the bus to work, standing near the corner
of  Indiana Avenue and Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
The day has brought the city a beautiful sunrise, but I can't really
see it where I'm standing. I'm looking around for something that might
make a decent picture. I look up to the the telephone lines,
running more or less straight, contrasted with the tree branches,
growing towards the light. There it is, my picture.
I just wish more of the red in the berries could be seen.

Traffic is headed into town at about a quarter of eight,
making an angled turn south from MLK Drive onto West Street.
The tall building in the center is "Big Blue," the JW Marriott
Hotel that opened almost a year ago. The building
is covered in blue glass that catches and reflects the sky
in such a way as to always make the building interesting
to look at, as though it were a painting.

Centered

In 2009, the IUPUI Student Center was opened,
establishing a place for student activities outside of the classrooms.
The school was originally started as a commuter college,
but has grown and evolved into a large,
university campus

The top photo shows the bell tower, located on the southeast corner
of the building, while the photo above is of the main entry,
looking north towards the bookstore and coffee shop.

Curbing Enthusiasm

Yesterday morning was gray and dreary. As we turned the corner
near work, I saw these men working at the intersection,
installing the forms for new concrete curbing.
I liked their bright, safety green shirts, worn over their
gray sweatshirts and blue denim pants,
the real "stonewashed" jeans.

Overnight rains soaked their work area, meaning no work
was done Tuesday, but the forms await their cement, lashed, I'm sure,
with a healthy dose of components to keep the poured
cement from freezing.

Sunset in Speedway

As I entered the grocery this evening to pick up a bit of salmon,
I stopped to take a picture of the still-glorious, fading sunset.
I liked the busy shoppers heading to their cars,
the glowing white orbs of light over the parking area -
a mundane scene fronting a beautiful backdrop.

Frosted

At this time of year, I begin looking for the frosted
edges the icy air creates from the dew.
The morning sun casts its light on the dried leaves,
creating subtle hints of a pink and blue
background for the lacy ruffles.

These were laying by the side of the drive
where I go into work.

Downtown Venice

There are two places where I can pick up the second bus for work,
one of them at the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Michigan Street.
Here there is a bridge that crosses over the Central Canal.
Apartments and condos have been built along the canal, many
with restaurants and cafes at sidewalk level.

The site is a popular place for walkers and joggers as the route
follows the canal from a point about one half mile
farther north from this location, progressing back towards town,
then west, to the White River and the Promenade
behind the Indianapolis Zoo.

In warmer weather, rowers using light shells, kayakers,
and people using little pedal-powered paddle boats
can be seen on the canal. There is even a gondola available
for romantic trysts. On occasion, the canal
will be used for the swimming portion of triathlons.
A co-worker has told me that the canal,
at four feet deep and little to no current, is relatively
easy to navigate. However, the yellow caps
worn by competitors are green by the end of
their swim, due to the dyes and anti-fungal
treatments used to maintain the canal.

December Theme: The Street Where You Live

When I saw this, I thought of artist Paul Klee.
I see things like this all around me, in the streets of Speedway,
yet where I live is pretty bland when looked at overall.
When I started this little blog, a part of my intent
was to show the small beauties that occur amid the plain
surroundings, to show what one can see
if they walked the neighborhood instead of taking their car.

This is the neighborhood just a half block down from where I live.
As most of us understand in the abstract, even while everything looks
innocuous, there is no telling the dramas that take place
within the tidy brick walls of the people either side of us.
It's the stuff of headlines we read every day:
"He seemed like such a nice man!"
"He never lost his temper!"
"She was always so helpful!"

Today is Theme Day on the City Daily Photo portal.
