Theme Day: Photo of the Year 2011

In November, as this portion of the world was leaning
towards winter, the weather was indecisive.
Days of mild temperatures had the roses convinced
it was their time to bloom and the bushes were laden with
pink flowers and buds. Overnight, the temperatures dropped,
leaving the plants covered with frosty lace.
As I walked to my workplace, I saw the roses edged with ice.
For me, their beauty hadn't died, but instead
had their lines enhanced and colors intensified by the
coating of frost. Can sensuality ever be cold?
The roses smolder in their icy coats.

The theme for this New Year's day is Photo of the Year 2011.

Beauty takes a myriad of forms, Sara. What you have captured here is a very fragile form, but much beauty has a fragility to it.

May I wish you good things for the coming year, Sara. Like good health. Like good laughs with family and friends. Like a tiny moment of joy as you walk along a country road by yourself. Small but beautiful things. Happy New Year.

How can you possibly choose a photo of the year from your beautiful collection, Speedway? I think you should be allowed a "best 100 photos of 2011" post.

Oh I'm a sucker for roses in any shape, colour or condition. That's one thin the roses in Australia will never see, frosting!! Gorgeous shot.

I agree, this image is both beautifully composed and absolutely spectacular.

Thank you all for your very kind comments. I have a small Canon PowerShot SX120 that travels with me just about everywhere. I usually have it either in my coat or jeans pocket because, as a friend would say, "you just never know." I've often regretted it when it wasn't with me, so now it's my companion.

I, too, love roses, but everyone takes pictures of them and it was unusual to find them frosted on my walk into work.

Thank for your generous praise, Dive. Would you want to go through all the pictures to find the "top 100"? I just want to get better, but you kind words are always welcome.

These are gorgeous, and the thing is, you are always looking for what the rest of us (not all) overlook. beauty in that tiny spot.

Thanks, Lin. As you can see, my little camera has become my buddy. It helps to keep long walks from becoming boring. Thing is, it's getting harder to find stuff, esp in winter. I find myself standing in the middle of a place wondering, "What am I overlooking?"

Looking at the City Daily Photo sites, I am always amazed at the high level of work and the beautiful pictures. It keeps me wanting to do better. I need to work that little machine a bit harder, learn more of its capabilities. *sigh*
